Yesterday was awful. Con helped me get to the dentist's and I was barely able to function.

Desks should have power strips built into them. Computers should be available in the shape of desks with tops that flip up like cars and stoves for easy access.
Charging would be induction or over the air.

Enj and I are trying to get back to work.

So far I've seen:
The Trap
Headhunters
Hamsun
Hypnotised
Astral City
Flame and Citron
Rango
Transformers
The Last  Mistress
Halfaouine
After the Wedding
Troll Hunter
Mozart's Sister

And one or two others. The only completely terrible one was Transformers. I haven't finished Hypnotised.
All the rest were good to very good.

Just started watching Viva Laldjerie.

heart's quilt

a friend of mine is working through a trauma in her life by making a quilt.
witnessing her progress, i understand something new about art.
she's only using patterns of one color, indigo, but shape and arrangement tell the story!
really it seems more like music composition than a visual tale --

long smooth shapes are her life before.
then small sharp cornered shapes jumbled crazy-quilt style as everything is thrown into sorrow, confusion, shock, and uncertainty.
after that comes the orderly opening freedom of the new future!
it will look amazing. and meanwhile, she recovers and heals.

i wonder how many quilts that i have viewed and thought, "nice", "lovely", "gorgeous", "weird", were opening someone's deepest heart to me, and i had no idea!

Art just left. He was able to get the replacement part because an Oly heating guru had ordered it yet not picked it up so the supplier sold it to Art. Art is a plumber and of course the heater dude would probably pay half price or less as Art would pay half or less for plumbing parts, which is why he was sold it - so wewt!

I'm glad it's fixed as it was malfunctioning again starting last night. It was 70 F which is far hotter than I can take. At least it wasn't 80 though like it has been for days.

I woke up with a monster headache and my left ear blocked, and it always seems like it's one trauma after another. I think Tiff is coming today.

I bought Paper Camera last night as I've had my eye on it for ages and it was half price. 99 cents, in other words. The purchase was failure-prone so I need to make sure my card was only charged once.

Art is here banging on the heating mechanism. He knows what's malfunctioning but is having trouble getting parts. The alternative is to completely replace it with attendant cost and downtime as the pipes would have to be drained and so forth. Heat is off now. Apparently every time the heat kicks in there's a chance it will malfunction.

Urthecast

A Vancouver-based company hopes to have two cameras hooked up to the International Space Station sometime this year that will offer Internet users a new twist on the aerial imagery offered by Google and other companies.
Unlike the satellite images users are already familiar with, which usually are months if not years out of date, Urthecast (pronounced Earth-cast) is promising to continually update its site with fresh photos and video.

Brothers is an ok film - not as good as Anders Thomas Jensen's movies as director, but ok.

Cyrus Farivar at Ars Technica:

Government formally drops charges against Aaron Swartz

In the wake of the tragic suicide of Aaron Swartz, the United States Attorney decided to formally drop the pending charges against the 26-year-old information hacktivist.
"In support of this dismissal, the government states that Mr. Swartz died on January 11, 2013," wroteCarmen Ortiz, the United States Attorney for the District Court of Massachusetts.
Swartz faced legal charges after he infamously downloaded a huge cache of documents from JSTOR. Over the weekend, Swartz' family said the aggressive legal tactics of the US Attorney's office contributed to his suicide.
The outpouring of grief has continued well into Monday, as even those who didn't know Swartz well (myself included) are shocked that someone so young and talented could feel so much pressure from the justice system that he would be compelled to take his own life. One computer engineering student, John Atkinson, wrote an eloquent post on Sunday that Swartz' death has been on his mind over the last few days—even though he didn't know Swartz personally, nor had he heard of Swartz prior to the arrest.
Aaron Swartz is what I wish I was. I am a bright technologist, but I’ve never built anything of note. I have strong opinions about how to improve this world, but I’ve never acted to bring them to pass. I have thoughts every day that I would share with the world, but I allow my fears to convince me to keep them to myself. If I were able to stop being afraid of what the world would think of me, I could see myself making every decision that Aaron made that ultimately led to his untimely death. This upsets me immensely. I am upset that we have a justice system that would persecute me the way it did Aaron. I am upset that I have spent 27 years of my life having made no discernible difference to the world around me. Most of all I am upset that Aaron’s work here is done when there is so much more he could have accomplished.
Swartz' funeral will be held in Highland Park, Illinois on Tuesday, January 15, 2013 at 10am CST—many tech luminaries, family, and friends are expected to be in attendance.

My phone seems to be fine. My fingers trail and so touchscreens are not easy, but the phone itself is fine. My bluetooth thing was supposed to arrive today but I haven't seen it. However, I was all-day busy first preparing for Con's visit to extract my stitches (and I got her to chuck my blood-soaked jeans in the wash), then afterward doing some things and making/eating a meal. I definitely have a fever problem which makes me very weak in afternoon/evening. After taking the acetominophen yesterday I was comparatively a superwoman and was up at 3 am cleaning the kitchen. I took more today then took ibuprofen Con brought me. I can't keep on doing that but what a difference it makes.
Anyway, I added The Rube as my ringtone today. I'm eager for the RepubWiFi OTA update as there is a wifi call echo (I understand) problem that it should address. I paid my landline bill today and need to cancel that and also Netflix (since I manage about one dvd a month).

Gerard Depardieu's drama has reached its peak, possibly :-D

Beeb sez:

Actor Gerard Depardieu has hailed Russia's decision to grant him citizenship, following a tax row with the government in his native France.

In an open letter, he said he loved Russia, calling it "a great democracy".

Mr Depardieu had recently announced he would give up his French passport after the government criticised his decision to move abroad to avoid higher taxes.

Moscow earlier said President Vladimir Putin had personally signed the decree granting the actor Russian citizenship.

In December, Mr Putin had said he would be happy to welcome the actor in his new country. "If he'd like to have a Russian passport, consider it settled," Mr Putin said.

Prime Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault had called Mr Depardieu's decision to leave the country "shabby".

In the letter, broadcast on Thursday on Russian TV station Pervyi Kanal, Mr Depardieu said: "I filed a passport application and I am pleased that it was accepted.

"I love your country, Russia - its people, its history, its writers. I love your culture, your intelligence."

He said that he had spoken to French President Francois Hollande and told him Russia was "a great democracy, and not a country where the prime minister calls one of its citizens shabby".

Lying in bed just laughing until I weep reading this thread:

"Whats an embarrassingly obvious fact you learned recently?"

'I also just learned last month, at age 19, that the Goodyear logo is Hermes's winged foot. I always thought, for some reason, that it was Elvis's head and body.'

'I learned that olives had pits when I was 12. I just thought they grew with the pimento inside.'
