As I say, I love reading about EVE, although I have no particular interest in playing. Massively pointed out a New York Times article about BoB's new strategy in the Empyrean Age faction warfare recently unleashed by CCP, the Icelandic company that makes EVE.
CCP has made a number of changes lately, what with upgraded graphics, characters being able to get off their ships and walk about, and a player council for input.
Does that make it more than a kiddie's game to ordinary people, now? Exactly how less real is it than anything else I don't see with my own eyes?

Lexx and I are now also EVE players, and we have a small corporation based in "high security" space. We don't engage in player-vs-player combat, concentrating our efforts thusfar on mining, manufacturing, and market sales, and we've largely ignored the added features of the Empyrean Age expansion. We're a long way from the BoB/GoonSwarm battles; we don't even venture into those areas of space, because it's too easy to get ganked.
One note I might make: while we do have the updated graphics and the player council ("Council of Stellar Management") you mention, the ability to get out of ships ("Ambulation") is still in development, and will probably not roll out till sometime next year.
Is it real? It's at least as real as Second Life is. But it's also the single most complicated computer game I've ever played. It's more complex than trying to fly a 747. :-)
