This old friend was a beta player who got banninated very early on, then came back but missed the beta atmosphere so much he moped around and finally left... a couple of years ago. This bears out what I always say - people return when their lives have room for SL. Sometimes it just needs them to become old enough to understand it. Once the pathway is known people come and go as they wish - it isn't necessary to tie them to a prim in order for them to count, any more than a person walking out Starbuck's door can no longer be counted as a Starbuck's customer.

You did? Why?
He got angry and shot a couple of Lindens (back when a couple of Lindens was about 10% of the company).

Don't know... I guess it was based on the fact that there would only be a few hundred people and they wouldn't be, at such an early stage, the kind to shot folks. I have (an obviously skewed) view of the early SL as a creative paradise full of nice friendly folk and no griefers.
I am a dreamer.

There will always be griefers. I don't think your vision is wrong; most of the people were exactly that, but there were also a few underage and/or undersocialised people. I think my friend was in the former category. It wasn't a "shoot people I don't know" type thing; I believe he had a disagreement in a conversation with the people he shot. It doesn't seem like a huge thing to me, although I suppose 4 years ago I might've thought it more important.
