A month-ish ago I got up then turned and saw a meduim-sized brown spider clinging onto the bedskirt. I did this: :((( then plugged in the stupid in-the-wall suctionisationing device and sucked it up. It looked like a hobo spider: :((((( This morning I got up and there was an inky black spider, same conformation but a bit bigger, and wandering around on top of the bed. :((((((((((((( I sucked it up (but was very glad it hadn't traipsed off out of sight while I was dragging the 9 miles of hose around and plugging it into the tube thingummy.

I don't like to think I have a nest of poisonous spiders in my bed, however it's difficult not to think that. /me hopes they stay down at their end.

HOLY SHIT! Bomb the bedroom! Get some phqing agent orange or DDT in there! They are dangerous! And fugly!

/me read the wikipedia page again... Hold off on the DDT and get more of the huge house spiders in:

"The best protection against hobo spiders in one's home is probably the presence of other spiders, such as the giant house spider (Tegenaria duellica; formerly Tegenaria gigantea) that will compete with them for territory and food and often kill them in confrontations.[1] Killing all spiders by using insecticides can result in the proliferation of a single species when its competition disappears, and since spiders consume many household pest insects, eliminating spiders can have serious consequences.[1] Chemical control of spiders is not recommended and should be considered only as a last resort"

Maybe you could interest Doc in a War of The Spiders CC event?

Yes, I know the GHS kills the hobos, but the GHS is just so... G.

I don't do insecticides. Ever. The odd thing about the extreme amount of spiders in this house is that, as SJ said, "What do they EAT????? There's nothing else here!" I said, "Each other." Washington has hardly any insects anyway. Spiders are interesting.

My niece has to deal with huntsman spiders occasionally - now just seeing those would about do me in.

It's unlikely that you have a nest of nasty spiders awaiting your sleepy time...and the fact that you saw two different species sounds like good news to me because I've read that the single most effective deterrent against the hobo spider is the presence of competing spider species.

You can hire someone to come in and clean up under and behind things...there are people who do just that without chemicals.

If you are interested, I'll ask my friend who just hired someone whod did muck out a bunch of hobo spiders from under her house. Let me know.

It occurs to me that next time you suck up a spider...you might empty the vacuum cleaner. Perhaps they've made an arachnid hotel there, and you keep blowing in new mating partners!

/me googles "hunstamn spider"...

CHRIST!

/me vomits, cries and faints at the same time.

lol
I have this fantasy that I am about to plug the vacuum hose into its wall pipe, and when I open the little round door a GIANT HAIRY LEG POKES OUT because all the spiders I have ever sucked up have somehow been reconstituted into one spider of DOOOOOOOM. It doesn't scare me; it's just a picture that pops into my head. Ha ha!

I want to ask for thoughts about improving the world -- what do people need? How can things be organised?
