Alonso Reviews Sukiyaki Western Django
Actually I did think the movie was a mess; I don't like anime or manga much either precisely for the same reason: there's nothing beyond the surface. Some movies are full and rich experiences, some movies are unsatisfying husks, and I put this in the latter category.
I did like the font for the opening credits very much, though - that's what stood out for me. Alonso has his own ideas.
Updatier Update: I decided that when it went missing before it was a yootoob server offline or something, so am posting it again. Alonso reviews the film Sukiyaki Western Django.
Outdated Update: YouTube took it down - apparently they don't allow movie reviews. After they took it down I deleted the page that said 'This video no longer exists." It doesn't really matter as it was just a silly thing, but I did think short clips used in reviews were all right.

Oh dear, and I was the one who recommended that unsatisfying husk. Hmm. I dislike westerns and agree with your opinion of anime, but I found the bizarre blending of the two amusing, if finally empty of meaning.
Why, those vile anti-robots!
I dislike westerns too but I love Tampopo, which is a sort-of western (?hmmm maybe, kinda sorta?) Well anyway the hero wears a cowboy hat and has longhorns mounted on his truck cab.

Ah, well - there's no knowing what I will like, and I need recommendations, so don't be put off.
It was in the same category, to me, as The Fall, Heaven's Gate, and other films that had something interesting about them but didn't add up to a full experience.
Makes my crown hurt thinking about the man with the katana in his.
I liked Tampopo, too, Enj.
Although if I were looking for a film I wouldn't actively seek a western, I suppose if one were good I'd like to see it. Unless by western we mean only those relentlessly derivative oaters and not any film set in the west.

Oh, good, because you mentioned I might like The Fall, and I have to say I can't recommend it to anyone else, for much the same reasons: an excess of form over content, style over stuff, though I am happy to have seen it.
I Liked Tampopo, too, also A Taxing Woman and The Funeral, by the same director, I think. Oh yes, and Kikujuro directed by and starring Takeshi Kitano (Beat Takeshi)
