The last high school I went to was very weird; it was also new and so the teachers tended to be fresh from school themselves. I remember a teacher calmly explaining to us that public education was set up to ensure that students were trained to tolerate boredom and accept authority in order to make useful factory workers.

I wonder if the fact that there's not much need for factory workers has contributed to moronisation by allowing a lack of emphasis on education. Since corporations pwn, and they don't have a use for most people, what would've been neatly-trimmed social lawns are decayed into weedy, abandoned lots.
