He's thinning them, but not in the way you imply. When I was a child we did things like run across the treetops on wild grapevines (small and brittle), clamber all over rooves of any height, etc., etc. Just imagine a futureworld without the comforts, where real courage and physical know-how is the gateway to survival.

That girl has some serious stones! I'd *LOVE* to do that! Probably would have as a kid - I use to to do all manner of bloody stupid stuff - crawling across the outside of the railway bridge was insane!
