Transformation theory of communication
Oh, oh! This is interesting:
From the visual to the electric age
These are all outstanding; it's been years since I paid any attention to Marshall McLuhan, but that's worked in my favour as the ideas are similtaneously old and new and give me a feeling of peering into either end of a telescope in turn.

he has been on my mind since i first set foot (?) into second life. the new medium that contains the old content...until...i keep looking for the new content and now and then see glimpses of it.
I hadn't read/listened to him for decades; although his name is the first to float up whenever such things are broached for me, I think my education is too spotty to've resulted in much more than that.
New content - I think the new content is a new vocabulary that is across a wider swathe than just SL, and we are already so familiar with it that it doesn't stand out.

i'm thinking more of - a movie contains the old content of a play until the possibilities of movie are fully recognized...a play just is story telling until the possibilities of a play are realized by a breakthrough creative person.
electric guitars just played old guitar style until maybe hendrix broke through.
NPIRL is how virtual worlds find their content that is not inherited.
