People are always warned about trying to find their way out of a forest for that very reason ... blazes are very helpful. To me this whole thing demonstrates that human beings are very sight-dependent (big news flash, that, eh?).
I loved this story too...so much I wrote a note to Temple Grandin and asked if she had any thoughts about the connections between her cows and humans...do we find it comforting in a primal sort of way to travel in circles? She wrote back that she didn't know but she found it interesting. I also thought that maybe a better understanding of this sort of phenomena might help in search and rescues efforts. Of course, I might be stuffing too much into the observation. I do that.
