Loki Eliot speaks the truth in his blogpost about developing in SL. LL needs to stop competing with their customers or before too long they won't have any.

LL can be so bloody short-sighted. You can see why they did both things (Linden Homes & Marketplace) but it's only until you see it laid out in that way do you see just how bad their moves have been.
They need to drop back, provide the platform and server space (at much lower prices!) and let SL grow in its own way - I guess they should be a benign socialist capitalist government ;-D

The funny thing with your blog comments is I can't subscribe to them until after I've posted a comment - that's why you often get two comments at once from me; one 'real' and the second a mere excuse so I can subscribe...
Well, it's been pretty obvious all along that their moves to co-opt the business models of their customers results in vastly decreased incentive for customers to be here at all, as well as bad feelings of the "undercut," "nickel and dimed to death," and "betrayed" variety.
They are squeezing out customers interested in building and running businesses whilst pinning their hopes on an influx of consumers - but the thing is, many people who like to support niche, off-beat, or just individual businesses are not terribly interested in buying from the company, and SL itself needs the allure of the possibility of having a little business to keep the population interested.
The spice must flow, and currently LL is unwisely diverting the spice away from their customers. That leaves precious little in the way of interest for many people.

Well we are all fools. Uncle Hammy is busy explaining that we, the customers, are to blame because we just won't go with the flow and shut the fuck up like nice little bottomless wallets spunking all our cash over the Lab like broken ATMs.
