Olympia Mayor Mah Recognizes Elizabeth Kendall
Special Olympic Washington Athlete Chosen To Compete
in the Special Olympics 2011 Summer World Games in Athens Greece
SEATTLE - On June 14 Olympia Mayor Doug Mah will recognize Special Olympics Washington athlete and City of Olympia resident, Elizabeth Kendall, as one of nine Washington state athletes chosen to compete in the Special Olympics 2011 World Summer Games in Athens Greece, June 25 – July 4.
Elizabeth stands as the only Special Olympics Washington athlete from Thurston County going to the 2011 Special Olympics World Summer Games and will join eight other athletes from Washington State as Team Washington. Elizabeth’s sport is power-lifting and she’s anxious to show what she can accomplish on the world stage. In addition to power-lifting, Elizabeth competes in football, softball, and volleyball.
The acknowledgment will take place at Olympia City Council Meeting at New City Hall located at 601 4th Ave. E. in downtown Olympia, WA on Tuesday, June 14. The program will start promptly at 7:00 p.m.
Elizabeth proudly works as an office assistant at the Department of Social & Health Services-Children’s Administration in Olympia and has lived independently for seven years and has had the opportunity to travel to many countries. Elizabeth also enjoys activities outside of sports, like watching Elvis impersonators, and cooking.
Elizabeth says she “Treasures Special Olympics as the pride and joy of my life; it has given me confidence, new friendships, better health, and a sense of accomplishment.”
The Team Washington is scheduled for an early morning flight on June 18 from SeaTac to Baltimore, Maryland where they will link up with 419 Special Olympics athletes from all fifty states and two U.S, territories forming Team USA. Then they’re off to Isle of Rhodes, Greece on June 19 in final preparation for the games and a ferry ride to Athens, where they will be joined by 7,500 Special Olympics Athletes from 185 nations competing in 22 Olympic-type sports.
Before flying off to the World Summer Games, Coca Cola of Bellevue will host a send off rally/celebration for Team Washington at their downtown Bellevue headquarters. Coca Cola employees and senior management will be on hand to wish them luck. Afterwards, Team Washington will travel to Safeco Field to be recognized and congratulated by the Seattle Mariners on a job well done and wishes of good luck in competition. The Mariners
are hosting a suite where the athletes can relax, woof [sic] down a few hot dogs and enjoy the game.
