i'm currently reading among other things the book SPOOK by Mary Roach in which she searches with unbiased intent for some kind of evidence of soul and life after death. fascinating reading!

When a "soul" departs, we observe the material body looks the same, but is very still; then it slowly cools and disintegrates. We call that death. But, as Temple Grandin asks, "where did it (the living being) go"? As she noticed, one moment, it is a living being, the next it is meat.
