I've been idly looking for a better puter for a year or so, but didn't really want anything that would make me feel more trapped than I already do (i.e. a desktop) but I didn't have much confidence that I could run anything I need on anny laptop I could afford. Also every prebuilt configuration had fatal flaws (why are the cards often so crappy?) and changing things to improve the build quickly went up-up-up in cost.
I just figured the right one would come along or not - either way was fine. I'd look on various computer sites and recently began checking in on Craig's List. I love reading specs so it wasn't a chore. SWMNBMIMB needs a laptop but doesn't require anything sooper-dooper, so I was looking on craigslist on Sunday and saw a desktop with great specs.
Without thinking too much I emailed, 'I'm interested. I'm disabled, though, so I'd need you to bring it here to show me and you probably don't want to do that. If you DO and if everything is as advertised email me back.' I just didn't expect anything, but he said he would. He brought it, set it up, showed it off, and I bought it. He was a very nice young man who'd built it himself and wanted money for his motorcycle.
It has everything I wanted and all good quality parts - quad core 3.4 ghz CPU, 8g RAM, 2x EVGA GTX570 in SLi, 64 bit OS, 27" monitor. I am installing/hooking things up bit by bit. I hooked up my ext drives, hooked up the SpaceNav, I'm thinking I'll just stick with Chrome rather than use FireFox and Chrome as FF is sort of bloated atm - on the other hand I do love the FF ftp addon, so FF isn't totally out of the running. I've installed Open Office and Sizer, Second Life and Fraps, Anteworld and AVG. Everything runs like a dream.
It will take a bit of time to make sure I have things set, then I want to clean my old puter and sell it. It's still better than what 75% of people need, by far. It's dual-core 2.66 ghz, 3g RAM, EVGA GTX275. It could be upgraded to 64 bit Win7, which I would've done had I found a cheap copy. Time to sell off some lindens.
I'm very happy with it, so far.
