You, the Living

In this poetic film from Roy Andersson plain-speaking characters reveal their truths at times directly to the viewer. It's just become "play now," due to it not functioning as escapist entertainment.

Just a small part, but Levon Helm puts in an appearance in The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada. The film was ok, but rather lacking in subtlety, however that was by design.

Island

I liked this film very much. The bleak landscape of rocks scoured by the elements, icy water, lowering sky, dirt, boards, and coal, is a fitting place for this tale of repentence and forgiveness. Ragged, dark clothing flapping around his legs, Anatoly ceaselessly wheels coal to the furnace.

In common with The Man on the Train, this film's star is a former rock musician. Петр Мамонов (Pyotr Mamonov) has been living as a religious since the 90s, and his performance is incredible.

What other films star ex-rockers?

"There are two kinds of men. I've joined the planners."
I'd wanted to see The Man on the Train for ages but never quite managed it until this evening. It's good. Jean Rochefort and Johnny Hallyday are wonderful.

Also made me think about that Don Quixote-that-never-was film about Terry Gilliams ill-fated attempt, called, perhaps, In Search of Don Quixote or something. Was interesting in a tantalising kind of way.

I want to ask for thoughts about improving the world -- what do people need? How can things be organised?
