I would guess they are offering ordinary starter avs just to get people in. As it says, once you are in you can change. Plus our CEO is a human - as far as I know the Sims has nothing but humans, so that might be his comfort zone and what he sees as the comfort zone of the masses. And he may be right.

if SL could take your picture when you sign in and bake you up a look-alke avatar, i think people would like that too!

There is something that does that as I recall - that multi-platform avatar system the name of which eludes me, which you can use in... er maybe VastPark among other places.
