The Deserted Station
Since Netflix changed their site I click a title to learn more about it and am nonplussed when it starts playing. It's happened to me several times - due in part to the new lack of colour-coding that makes DVD and streaming films look the same in parts of the site.
This film was quite good so it was ok, but still...

Duck Season
This absorbing small film reflects the director's admiration for Jim Jarmusch. It's very visually interesting, especially the last shot (which made it worthwhile to me). It also has a lot of dead animals (which I didn't know would be there) as some scenes were shot in a real pound. That doesn't bother me anywhere near the amount that films which kill/maim animals do, however; there are a few I can never get out of my head :((((((((((

DVDs
I was going to get Leaves of Grass but instead opted for Broken Embraces. Leaves of Grass has incredibly spotty reviews - maybe I'll get it next. I just don't want two bad films in a row.

Inception Intervention
Two hours-worth of CG movie trailers end-to-end would be more entertaining and probably have a more cohesive storyline. I didn't care about any of these characters at all. The dialogue blew, and the acting was spotty. The snow was grey. The screenwriters had quite obviously been impressed by World Builder.
I was going to say it's a waste but... a waste of WHAT? I always see Leo DiCaprio in a rose-tinted aura emanating from Gilbert Grape, however his current schtick appears unequal to his early work. He does look like Jimmy Cagney now, which is cool (but he probably can't dance).
I'm not saying no one will like it.* I certainly wanted to be entertained, I just wasn't. I erroneously thought it was scifi, so I obviously was a lamb to the slaughter - not my usual way of finding movies.
* If you like it go away.

The new people have been getting the mail every day! w00t! I wasn't entirely pleased when Mrs. New Person walked in with it, yet it was kind of her to do that. *locks doors*
Supposedly Inception is due from Netflix today. I just noticed that I have a kind of legacy plan no longer offered: "If you switch from this plan you can never go back." I feel like this blog template is like that. If I switch I can never go back.
Yesterday I got out of the shower and Mr Landlord was on a ladder in front of my windows. Haha!

I liked this film very much. Yolande Moreau was amazing in the part, and story was absorbing. There aren't many - or maybe any - other films about women artists who were working class. This one takes the facts of the artist's life and makes a work that feels complete and magical, in a way that isn't at all smoothed over or made into a lie.

Revanche
This was very good.
The film never makes fast, lazy judgements about people, and it's very unusual in that respect. Each character is full, unpredictable, and will not fit into any box. Generously, it allows for the notion that people are capable of growth. Life is messy, it says - to pretend otherwise is to deny the need for, and value in, forgiveness.
