Meaningless

I had a weird day. I stayed up until 3 or so, but got up at 7:30ish and wanted to check something so went online. I'd contacted, the night before, someone about the NA infrastructure damage, which was collected as landmarks in a notecard and passed on to a different person a year ago. After a few times asking for updates, a nowty reply put me off asking any more, so six or seven months later I gave the notecard to the first person in this confusing (and pretty meaningless) tale. Although enthusiastically received at the time it wasn't acted on, nor was it remembered at all today, so I wound up transcribing the ugly great list into Notepad and appending it to a ticket. I hadn't done that at first as I was specifically told it wasn't a DPW-doable project. I felt a bit guilty for being less cheerful than usual, but I hadn't had any coffee at that point and this six years worth of damage just weighs heavily upon me. I know they are busy, and it's low down on their list, and that no matter how simple the fixes would be (copy selected for almost everything) it still demands time. I'd do it if I were allowed, but alas I am not.

Then I did a lot of completely odd things like taking part in a UPenn research event just to see how someone did research events (I got burnt up in a fire because I wasn't motivated to run out of the building) and talk to the attendees. The first one I talked to had transferred from the TG a year ago, and gave me a brief outline as to how things fare over there (not well, apparently). There was a tall, blue Avatar movie avatar, about eight feet tall, and a very tall tatooed man with a horse's tail who placed first (I placed last hah - but I think I was the only novice and I had nothing motivating me). I don't have any idea why I went. I attempted a number of good deeds for sufferers asking for help on the forum, one of whom had something spamming her with messages on her sim (which I ran down), a non-English speaker who rejected my help (hah), and so on. Someone asked to pose for CC and even though I was not prepared I let him, and I got at least one decent picture out of it. There was some confusion at first as I couldn't see the anims he was playing; finally I understood and told him to play inworld not locally, and it was fine.

I started working on a blogpost explaining step by step how to fight as a Tiny, but was waylaid by my poser (who was quite nice).

A completely meaningless list, like my meaningless damages list, I suppose.

Young says "If you give me not every week" is pure poetry so I am adding it to the poem made from rearranged snippets made by the Poetry Generator on Clematis Isle.

Here's to Oblivion from Alabama

If you give me not every week
The lush texture of my relentless desire
To melt into untouchable,
I am a rock
standing... dissolving... isolated.
Utterly wrong.
With a blunt object
take over tomorrow.
Could you please melt into concrete?

Although I wouldn't consider myself a good verbal communicator, I've been writing drivel keeping journals of some kind or another since I was single digits old. My family is very bookish* but everyone else** had written words going one way - in - and I had them both coming and going. I was the letter-writer (and plenty of people to write to since only part of my immediate family was even in the same hemisphere), too, and writing billions of letters seemed perfectly ordinary, although I think it's not been the usual thing at all in my lifetime. My sketchbooks are full of drawings and written ideas for paintings, as well as anything else that I wanted to note; although any kind of artwork is something one does without words and in a non-verbal and timeless place, jotting down words to expand on a hastily scrawled idea is useful.

Although I still hate eating without feeding text into my eyes, it's been more difficult to read lately because I hadn't a clue how much of reading is physical until turning a page became difficult. Mostly at the moment I'm reduced to reading the New Yorker and Smithsonian and tons of online things of varying quality. Both reading and writing have their visual element; I absolutely loathe being read to*** as it removes the visual element that you'd think would stand in the way but instead allows transmission of ideas from the author to the reader without clouding the imagination. That sounds like a "duh" thing to say, but the simultaneous invisibility/visibility is interesting to me. A bit like mouseovers.

* Understatement.
** My sister Deborah would ALWAYS disappear wherever we were (likely to be a used book shop anyway), precipitating a frantic hunt at going home time. It was pointless to call her name, although we did, as she wouldn't hear (or just wouldn't acknowledge ,-- more like her), and we'd inevitably find her, nose in a book somewhere. "Just wait until I finish this chapter." She'd always read in the car, and when I said that made me feel sick she replied, "Yes, well it makes me feel sick, too, I just do it anyway."

***D would like doing that sometimes when I was small (I was quite capable of reading whatever it was myself, but she liked reading aloud).

Looking Glass

I was speaking with someone this morning who does what I do - how infuriating! That is, when I said X he processed the question and responded to it plus all the things he knew and attached to it. I know I do this - that's why I frequently don't give answers that make sense. It's like I am answering one question further along or just making a follow-up remark to my answer that I never made.

Once an ultra-annoying* physicist showed me a flag and said, "What flag is this?"
It was an Australian flag, which fact seemed so rudimentary to me I launched into an anecdote about the Southern Cross pointer star and how a Kiwi beauty pageant winner accidentally picked the wrong flag as the two are the same except for the pointer star.
Meanwhile he snickered because obviously I had no clue, he thought.

I think I have the ASKING part down. I just don't think I ANSWER. It's like this:
X: Where are you?
Y: You need me?
X: I just need to know where you are. Are you at home?
Y: (goes home) I am now.
X: But when I asked, were you then?
Y: Should I go back?
X: Back WHERE?

or

X: Is that something you made?
Y: It isn't what I was telling you about last week.
X: What did you tell me about last week?
Y: You wanted something to go from Point A to Point B.
X: Oh, so you didn't make it?
Y: I SHOWED it to you - yes, I made it.
X: No, I mean this thing.
Y: This is something different.
X: Uh. You didn't make it?
Y: YES, of course I did.
*X collapses from exhaustion.*

* ultra, ultra, ultra

Trying to Be Clear; Failing Miserably

Today
Me:
"Some contests end up with everything submitted belonging to the company sponsor. What happens to the video submissions for this contest?"
Them:
"We have no prob with this.....
you are free to upload videos related to sponsor or not....."
Me:
"You misunderstood. My question is whether your company will claim ownership of submitted works."

Wednesday: "sorry for misunderstanding....
we are not owner and we will not be owner of the videos
we don't use them for commercial uses........
you are free to submit them also to other websites.......
we only ask that videos submitted for the contest have to stay on the website after the end of the contest
hope this clear your doubt"

Take this bottle; it's for Mel to hide.
Yesterday:
Someone at Motorability needed a vendor set up. I asked what he had to put in it and he said nothing. Repeatedly I asked him, in different ways, what he had to put in the vendor he said he needed. REPEATEDLY. He kept saying he had nothing, which didn't compute.
Finally he IMed me later in the day:

person X: I was thinkin about getting the vendor stuff outta the way
Osprey Therian: What do you have?
person X: what are you McGuyver
person X: okay
person X: I have a fork
person X: a Simpsons DVD
person X: and a beer
person X: GO
person X: lol
Osprey Therian: Well, what do you have in mind?
person X: justa vendor is all
person X: I hav a few of em
Osprey Therian: Well, I thought you wanted a vendor set up, but you don't sound like you have things to put in it.
person X: oh lol
person X: of course
Osprey Therian: Well I've been asking you! <--over, and over, and over...
person X: I have things to put in it
person X: WELL I'VE BEEN TELLING YOU bsolutely nothing -- what does this mean?
person X: lol person X: absolutely even
Osprey Therian: OK so if we are talking about me making a vendor texture and setting it up with your items in it, can you send me the items so I can photog them for the vendor textures? -- That was purely me trying to rephrase and jiggle some information free.
person X: I have shirts a hat a flag a sign the driver cards -- ZOMG Finally.
person X: ok 1 sec
Osprey Therian: Can you send me 1 of each?
person X: I'll send you what I got so far

I want to ask for thoughts about improving the world -- what do people need? How can things be organised?
