Corpsicles
I was just reading a somewhat comical article in the New Yorker about corpsicles (as my sister termed them), otherwise known as frozen people hoping to be revived at some unknown date far in the future. The NYer wouldn't let me read it online (even though I've been a subscriber for eons) for some unknowable reason which will miraculously self-heal, I'm sure, so I can't excerpt it here, but tcha, who cares. Basically a cryo-dude said if you aren't religious this is your only shot at an afterlife :-D I thought that was funny, for some reason, and played into my belief/disbelief thing.

Their chart:
-----------------------works | doesn't work
Get Frozen |-----------live --------die
Don't get frozen |---- die --------die

The New Yorker said it reminded them of this chart:
-----------------God exists | God doesn't exist
Pray a lot |---------- live-----------die
Don't pray |--------- die------------die

It brought up someone frozen perhaps against his wishes, which made me wonder what would happen in this case (this is if what the corpsicle people believe is true):
--------------------------Unbeliever | Believer
Get frozen |---------------- live ---------??? (accidentally frozen)
Don't get frozen |--------- die--------- live

Of course, I think you'd just stay frozen until the power goes out, then turn to sludge. A big* cryogenics company is in Arizona, which makes that even more likely and ewww-worthy.

* Relatively - at least one hopes it isn't really big.

Tomorrow marks five years since my pater died, and five years and 6 months since my mother died. I don't usually think about it too much, but for some reason it's been on my mind. Five years! I've been missing them this past week. I hope that isn't some kind of warning for another go-round.

My experience was that when someone dies there is a full year of grieving, but if someone else dies during that time the clock is reset for the first one. There was a time when it was just one after another, which was awful. Family, friends, 80s, 70s, 50s, 40s... blecch.

My method of grieving was to watch Losey's Don Giovanni over and over and over and over for six months. I'm not at all tired of it, but I've seen it about 300 times. I had an answering machine full of really awful messages I hadn't deleted, like my mum calling for help, and a nurse calling to say, "There's been a change in your mother's condition,"* and a nurse saying, "We are trying to get in contact with (my father's wife). There has been a change in her husband's condition,"* and many more of the winding up in the emergency room variety. One day I decided to play them with the idea of keeping a couple (my mother's voice). It was like someone grabbed my hand and hit DELETE DELETE DELETE DELETE on every message. That's the only experience I've ever had of that kind of thing. Uh.... whatever "that" kind of thing is. The DELETE action is exactly what my mother would want me to do, but I wouldn't've done it.

I don't have the knack of believing anything, perhaps as I wasn't brought up to, so I have no clue, but it might be either (or both) that the energy falls back into a vast energy pool like raindrops falling into the sea (I'm a great knitter-upperer of everything and like everything to be connected, which I see as a longing for that state of one-ness) or that life is snuffed out (as SJ said the other day) like a candle (adding, "And that would be all right, too.").

I like talking with people about what they think happens after death, and although I don't see how anyone could have any more information than anyone else, it's fun (to me) to get different views. Sometimes I talk with my jin shin man about it, and he has a different take on life and death than I do. My view is A) we take life too seriously, B) it might be better as a wild roller coaster ride, C) individual personalities don't persist beyond a lifetime. He thinks life can and should be a calm trip as opposed to a roller coaster ride, and that we carry on past death.

I was surprised recently to discover that my rl knitted-up group of intimates had unraveled, but I suppose I shouldn't've been, since I'm not actively whipping people up into a frenzy anymore in meatspace. Everyone is the same to me, they just don't interact with each other. My knitting and whipping is confined to The Show Must Go On! at the moment.

*Code, apparently, for ZOMG get here fast.

:(

Soj, full name The Sojourner, has died. :(((((((((

She created the Dreams community. We had a TSMGO show at the Dreams Fair in April.
To me 2008 is the year of community in SL, and the Dreams community has been a success story for three years, and will go on into the future. I remember when Dreams was on the mainland and I participated in a "Christmas in July" build contest. Soj didn't understand what I'd built until after about a week, when she laughed* at the wrapped packages arranged as a sexeh babe in a hammock, with pointy ribbon bewbs. I was miffed as the rules said "no particles" yet one of the winners used particles, heh. Oh, those innocent days of yore :D

*She sent me an IM saying, "I just noticed what it is!" Ha ha!

SJ came over which was great fun. She told me about the trip she and Michael went on to England and Scotland (business + pleasure), gave me a nice ring (from the trip) that I ALREADY LOST :'(] and some "Boudreaux's Butt Paste" (not from the trip, but trippy) that apparently was the occasion for much glee when she found it for sale. When she asked me what I wanted her to bring I asked for a gallon of plain, lowfat yoghurt, which freaked her out no end. Her mother said, "Just do it," as apparently Missy has learned that SJ, I, and countless of our ilk are just too freakin' strange to be understood.

She told me a funny story about Gigi's daughters arguing over the disposition of her remains, with Missy on the side of cremation. Missy said, as some kind of oddball example, how if SJ died her ashes might be sprinkled in an area where wild wolves roam. When SJ arrived the other woman, unwilling to believe anyone could be so weird, asked if SJ would be happy if her ashes were thusly sprinkled, and SJ lit up and said, "Wow! SWEET!"

I showed her TSMGO video (unfinished but still good) and pointed out Enjah (SJ knows Enjah from having shipped one of my paintings to her), and me.

Con came over Thursday and we had a good time. She has quit her job (at Batdorf & Bronson Coffee)* and so has time to goof around a bit. I made her watch TSMGO and the Combat Cards vid, from which she did not take away a clear idea how to play the game (of course, as she's never been in SL).

This is much more visiterationing than I'm used to, but has been good.

The Monsters have threatened to visit, and Lucia and Jim have said the same, so the excitement may continue . Tiff is coming over soon (did she really say Wednesday - I need to email her as that's not a good day).

*Which is an Olympia coffee roastery that has spread all over the place. We both knew Dick Batdorf, whose longtime dream to have a very high quality roastery became reality way back in... I suppose the eighties... . During Annie$'s bad art auction one year (to raise money for the Food Bank), at which my friend KGF and I were the presenters (Anne insisted we wear those highly inflated-looking plastic naked breasts and bottoms over our clothes) Dick bought a stack of ancient polka records Con had donated, then was dead of a heart attack the next day. Con always attributed his death to the polka. He was a nice man. Anyway, after he died L and C bought it, and they are nice, too, and kept the name.

Ages ago, and for many years, my friend Lucia taught at Southern Illinois University, but lived here, and went back and forth. Her husband Jim stayed here as his job is in Seattle. She got to know various people, some of whom I met either there or here. One noteworthy summer I went to Australia, came back, did my laundry, and the next day flew to Carbondale with L - company for her as she settled back in. The trip was first by ordinary jet then by wee tiny jet, and a friend of hers picked us up at the (tiny) airport and took us to the house L had bought in a shady sidestreet of that sleepy town.

We went to a faculty party at someone-or-other's house. Mostly in the garden, it was, with humidity of the milky sky variety. I have a vague memory of something blown by the sudden wind into the swimming pool, a brief but violent storm, meeting Paul, a child or two. Lucia took me all over including a funny student bar with 25 cent beer (blecch), to her office, to university galleries and the bookstore, on a woodland hike (it was too hot and humid to enjoy the jaunt), to an old school from institutionalised segregation times that had been reworked into an interesting arts place, and many other places.

She introduced me to Dave and Rachel, who raised llamas and lived in a nice farmhouse on a rural lane. They took us out on a boat trip at night, and we swam and drank beer and looked at things. That was fun. Some years later Dave, who had always been perfectly healthy and fine, had some kind of symptoms that led his doctors to operate. The surgeon cut into a vascular tumor, causing Dave to nearly bleed to death. They hastily zipped him up again but because the bleeding was in his spine he became an instant paraplegic. That was, I think, 7 years ago.

Lucia remarked how strong Dave's will to live was. No matter what, and beyond the point we - she and I - might've packed it in, he struggled on, relishing life when there wasn't a bad problem bringing him down, like say, intense pain. The bad problems of pain and so on, the critical issues, were solved, and Dave went on. The doctors gave him far fewer years than seven. In part due to his own nature, but also because of Rachel's attention and a degree of financial stability that remained even through the medical bills, he was able to go on and on. And loved life, too. He died the day before yesterday.

Oh, I see Eileen Caddy has died - she and her husband and a third person founded Findhorn, the spiritual uh.. place in Scotland that attracted many followers from all over. My mother was interested in Adele Davis, the original Prevention magazine, and general old-school health food practises and also in places like Findhorn, where cabbages the size of footballs leapt eagerly from stony ground.

I saw her around a bit and enjoyed her work. I love my Dancing Dog Hat. She died at the end of December of a brain tumour, I hear.

I want to ask for thoughts about improving the world -- what do people need? How can things be organised?
