*shifts uneasily* Uh... @sl why did you screw up the WindLight settings? So much is broken - why deliberately break something that worked? Yes, day cycles didn't work, but creating and using presets worked. And I used that every day.

It's misty and cool and there's rain likely for the next five days, so coating the deck doesn't seem possible as it requires dryness. I seem to've fallen into a kind of purgatory wherein four men spend 13 hours a day a few feet away from me, my computer has been broken forever, and the weather yo-yos from 105° to 52°. Did I miss something? Did I die and go into a modern version of Hell? Which circle do neverending computer problems fit into?
At least I have the approriate labels for this post.

I love the UI. If it goes all stupid and useless I don't know what I'll do.

Snowing.
It's above freezing at the moment but is supposed to drop to 25ºF by 8pm and 20ºF as the low. I have to leave and to go to jin shin in a few minutes.
Update: Back. It was sunny and snow-free though cold in Oly. I drove back to a white-out, although there's not much accumulated snow on the ground.

Ages ago, and for many years, my friend Lucia taught at Southern Illinois University, but lived here, and went back and forth. Her husband Jim stayed here as his job is in Seattle. She got to know various people, some of whom I met either there or here. One noteworthy summer I went to Australia, came back, did my laundry, and the next day flew to Carbondale with L - company for her as she settled back in. The trip was first by ordinary jet then by wee tiny jet, and a friend of hers picked us up at the (tiny) airport and took us to the house L had bought in a shady sidestreet of that sleepy town.
We went to a faculty party at someone-or-other's house. Mostly in the garden, it was, with humidity of the milky sky variety. I have a vague memory of something blown by the sudden wind into the swimming pool, a brief but violent storm, meeting Paul, a child or two. Lucia took me all over including a funny student bar with 25 cent beer (blecch), to her office, to university galleries and the bookstore, on a woodland hike (it was too hot and humid to enjoy the jaunt), to an old school from institutionalised segregation times that had been reworked into an interesting arts place, and many other places.
She introduced me to Dave and Rachel, who raised llamas and lived in a nice farmhouse on a rural lane. They took us out on a boat trip at night, and we swam and drank beer and looked at things. That was fun. Some years later Dave, who had always been perfectly healthy and fine, had some kind of symptoms that led his doctors to operate. The surgeon cut into a vascular tumor, causing Dave to nearly bleed to death. They hastily zipped him up again but because the bleeding was in his spine he became an instant paraplegic. That was, I think, 7 years ago.
Lucia remarked how strong Dave's will to live was. No matter what, and beyond the point we - she and I - might've packed it in, he struggled on, relishing life when there wasn't a bad problem bringing him down, like say, intense pain. The bad problems of pain and so on, the critical issues, were solved, and Dave went on. The doctors gave him far fewer years than seven. In part due to his own nature, but also because of Rachel's attention and a degree of financial stability that remained even through the medical bills, he was able to go on and on. And loved life, too. He died the day before yesterday.

Someone's forum post about a dog reminded me of a husky at school that became very ill from, we thought, salmon poisoning. Although he had an owner that person was not interested in doing anything for the dog, so the adults at school got together to try to help it. It had crawled under a building, but I think Wayne, the maintenance man, somehow got him out. I said I would give him a home. The others gave me all the dogfood they had been buying (the owner didn't buy food for the dog). A vet was enlisted to treat the dog, which was a beautiful and intelligent animal. I drove him to the office, and the vet told me it could possibly be salmon poisoning but was more likely parvo. The vet was kindness itself and was doing this for free.
That night the dog became much worse, and - well, never mind the details. I sadly rang the vet and took the dog to the office to be euthanised. Upon pulling in the parking lot the dog wagged his tail in anticipation of seeing the kind veterinarian.

Since someone thinks he has a case in court arguing that LL advertised that SL residents could buy land, and it turned out to be *gasp* digital data on a server, I shall consider demanding kneecaps, a fighting duck, an aggressive lamb, a pair of sabre-toothed rats, and any other things I own on Human Age (which is silly but interesting for the 5 seconds required to play each day).
