Reading all the information about head injuries and their long-term effects makes me wonder what all *my* head injuries add up to. I've had some rather serious concussions; a NYer article recently said athletes with head injuries have a much greater liklihood of developing (for instance) amyotrophic lateral sclerosis than the general population. The same article said women are more susceptible to effects following injury than are men.
The effect one person can have on the world...
I wonder if a lot of people who might otherwise aspire to political office in, for instance, the USA, are reluctant to run because marijuana is illegal and they were users at some point (even long ago). In other words, is the field of political contenders much narrower than it would be if marijuana were legal? That illegality seems arbitrary and stupid (and costly in terms of lives and enforcement money).

Yay! We finally got our land back after ages! This means I can once again hold Combat Cards in Europa!
I'm nearly through making card images for the Splintered Rock reskinning.
Enjah, Lucy, and I tested the duck circle and it works ok. I need to build a Burning Duck (or someone else can).
Snowed off and on today, but it didn't stick. A storm is forecast to hit in the wee hours, though, with a few inches.

It's the end of the blogorum today -supposedly something new is rolling out next week. I've been through so many endings of the official SL forums it's hard to get worked up about it. In fact this iteration, on the despised Jive software, harbours a lot of useless forumites and not much content. The next software is called (apparently) "Lithium." o.O LL should perhaps stop picking forum software by the words they think best apply to their customers.
The original forum was best, but most of that was due to the freshness of SL and how it attracted very interesting people.

It feels silly to say, "I've always loved trees," "I've always loved being in the woods," as it seems like well, duh, everyone does - except (strange as it seems to me) NOT everyone does. I spent a high proportion of my life (up to and just past the development of illness) out in the woods. As soon as I was diagnosed with m.s. I realised with a start that I *was* Daphne - I was turning into wood. Wise, those dratted ancients. In my case I was in danger, too, but it was my body not my mind which made the choice to escape. I sometimes think of it as an animal caught in a trap that gnaws its own foot off.

Trees
I was idly wondering, "Has anyone ever written a BAD song about trees?" since the only ones I can think of are excellent (Ombra mai fu and Kalinka). I googled 'songs about trees' and the scales fell from my eyes with a rush... or actually Rush ('The Trees'), plus 'Tie a Yellow Ribbon Around the Old Oak Tree' plus 'The Pine Tree" and so on ad infinitum.
I don't blame the trees, though. It's just another example of how we humans appropriate perfectly noble and good things then gussy them up until they are meaningless. As well as being the only earthly species with a host of good qualities, we are alone in our ability to trivialise and churn out endless streams of crapola. Even applying labels like 'noble' and 'good' is a human concoction. We are odd ('odd' being a human invention).

I watched "A Prairie Home Companion." Sadly it wasn't good. It had a thousand good elements - performances, sets, costumes, casting - however the plot was entirely bizarre. Beyond bizarre. More like someone grafted a lunatic's imaginings onto a proper story... erm, well that's what it is, I suppose. I was filled with hope initially as one of the previews on the DVD was for The Agronomist, a film I love.

Memory is a funny thing. Things will pop up out of nowhere giving no clue as to why they've floated into sight rather than staying beneath the limen with the rest of memory's jetsom. The past four or five days I've had a shadowy memory float nearly into view, but I hadn't looked at it until just now. That happens now and then, of course; I reckon it's the same for everyone, and that perhaps a word spoken, a scent, a misheard song (or the taste of a madelaine) is the trigger for not just deep memories of childhood or other meaningful things, but more often snippets of information about events we never were part of to begin with. This time began with a vague thought: the punk rocker girl raped and murdered in Seattle... I was lying on my bed just now and wondered what her name was.... had a rare letter in it, Z perhaps... Names burst up with accompanying feelings of "close," "similar." After a couple of minutes it appeared in my mind: Mia Zapata.
Memory is a funny thing. The progression of time is another odd one. I looked up Mia - she died in 1993. Not terribly long ago, but there's a gulf between her world and the one now that seems wide but is less qualitative than about the current highly gadgeted accessorisation. We lean on our gadgets so heavily that were the power grid to go out millions would barely function - I think, anyway. I wonder if any modern eighteen year period would NOT have developments making its end look completely different from its start. Be that as it may it's as though Mia, a young woman whose future was taken from her, lost years that seem to've held the twisting of time from a contiguous grouping of years (libraries, isolation, first-hand experiences) to a new and unrelated group of years (constant contact, second-hand experiences, digital media): a break with the past, a new paradigm, obsolescence of prior beliefs and technology. Surely *that* doesn't happen every eighteen years.

As we all know I think the usual way human beings are manipulated (by dint of their basic nature) into giving up untold hours of their lives so gaming companies can sell meaningless widgets to make twenty-five cents X a bazillion is bad and wrong (I'm looking at you, Facebook), so it's nice to read this from Eskil, whose L.O.V.E is original in every way.
I can't play it as it's miserable (as are all games) with one hand, but I love L.O.V.E, in any case.

Adobe Flash made me update and then videos looks funneh - split in two. For some unknown reason I looked in Settings and unticked Hardware Acceleration and refreshed and it was fine. Only thing I tried, so I was lucky it worked.

I met Enj in There in, oh, 2004 I suppose. She was part of the Uru diaspora, and There had quite an influx when Uru Online closed the first time. I met her again in SL, and we hit it off and became partners in crime :-D SL has been much more fun with a BFF than without, I know that.
Although I've been goofing around in the mesh viewer on Aditi since it first came out, I had never used it on Agni before today. The depth of field very quickly becomes something hard to do without, as, of course, are shadows. I didn't do any tweaking, but at that location at that moment I had about 16fps, which isn't great but borders on bearable for the time being.Osprey Therian

This exemplifies the beauty of Second Life.
If you haven't properly tried SL you are missing out - not just on some random things but whole worlds. It may take a bit of work to learn how to get the most out of the experience, but the whole of life is that way. An easy experience is usually superficial and throwaway; only a child would be put off by a challenging environment. SL has great depths and heights, and contains the range of human endeavors and interests from the grotty to the profound. Not a chatroom or a simplistic game, Second Life is a suite of creative tools wrapped up in a 3D environment that enables you to create from your dreams and nightmares and share the experience with others in real time.12 February 2011

I had a little money in WaMu as a leftover in their free checking account program that I used to buy things online as there wasn't much danger in using its associated card. WaMu was absorbed by Chase, and slowly the account changed. I had a missive from Chase some weeks ago stating their plan to charge $10 monthly for my account, beginning in February. I rang up and spoke to a woman who said accounts couldn't be closed *except* in person, but who, when I explained my feebleness, thought she might be able to do something but their network was down and I should call another time.
I rang yesterday and was told I had to be there in person; nevermind that I can remotely transfer all the money out - I just can't close the account, and an unclosed account, she said, still gathers moss... er fees. Can there be any other reason for that other than making it hard to get away from them? My credit union doesn't even *have* buildings to go to - and I like it that way.
Today I rang a few times trying to get through and said I'd be there at 12:30, and they did the necessary paperwork and came out to my car so I could scrawl/sign their chits. Following that it was off to Frank's for my second-to-last appointment before he goes to the Antipodes. Then groceriteriasisationing and back home with a pounding headache. Not a very interesting day, really, but there you have it.

'Montagnier's new research is investigating the electromagnetic waves that he says emanate from the highly diluted DNA of various pathogens. Montagnier asserts, "What we have found is that DNA produces structural changes in water, which persist at very high dilutions, and which lead to resonant electromagnetic signals that we can measure. Not all DNA produces signals that we can detect with our device. The high-intensity signals come from bacterial and viral DNA."
Montagnier affirms that these new observations will lead to novel treatments for many common chronic diseases, including but not limited to autism, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and multiple sclerosis.'
